What Is Hexagon Tile?

Hexagon tile, sometimes called “honeycomb tile” or “hex tile,” refers to any tile with six sides. The word hexagon comes from the Greek words “hexa” (six) and “gonia” (angle).
To be more specific, a hexagon is a two-dimensional, six-sided polygon with six edges, six vertices, and six angles.
Hexagon Tile in Interior Design
Hexagon tile has been a popular interior design choice for over 100 years, notably gaining prominence in the 1920s, although hexagonal shapes were also used in the architectural designs of ancient cultures like Greece and Egypt.
This geometric tile fits well with nearly all interior design choices, which is why we included it in our Timeless Tile Styles, Versatile Types of Tile, and Tile That Never Goes Out of Style blog posts.

Hexagon tile is neat, orderly, and can be either bold or subtle, depending on the color and pattern you choose. Black and white hexagon mosaics are a common traditional choice, but today, we see many larger hexagon tiles in a variety of colors taking center stage. Their consistent pattern can add visual interest to any space.
You can find hexagon tiles made from porcelain, ceramic, natural stone, or glass, so there are plenty of options.
For a twist on the classic hexagon, consider choosing picket tile instead. This is essentially an elongated hexagon-shaped tile resembling a picket fence that can also be categorized as a subway tile variation.

Any type of geometric tile can have a soothing effect, thanks to its predictability and repetition. It can make small spaces appear larger and add depth. When used strategically, geometric tile can also draw the eye to the room’s focal point.
You can use hexagon tile for a variety of projects:
Hexagons in Nature

Part of the reason that hexagons are such an appealing interior design choice is because they naturally occur in nature. This geometric shape holds a lot of appeal because it’s so ingrained in the world around us. For instance, honeycombs, snowflakes, basalt (cooled lava) formations, and turtle shells have a hexagonal structure.
It’s thought that hexagons are common in nature because they are extremely efficient. When filling a space with cells that are the same size and shape (in the case of a honeycomb, for instance), squares, equilateral triangles, and hexagons would all work–but hexagons require the least total length of wall to do so, and are the optimal choice.
The Symbolism of Hexagons

While it’s not necessary to consider the symbolism behind the shape of your tile, it can be a fun way to delve deeper into your interior design choices.
The hexagon is often associated with harmony and balance. Due to its connection with bees and honeycombs, it’s frequently symbolically linked to concepts like hard work, community, interdependence, and cooperation.
Many spiritual practices use hexagons as tools for visualization and meditation. Some connect it to the idea of transformation as well.
Using hexagons in your interior design can promote these concepts and add new meaning to your space, especially when used intentionally.
