Tile Type Spotlight: Chevron

Tile Type Spotlight: Chevron

Chevron is a pattern consisting of symmetrical V-shapes that create the appearance of arrows or seamless zig-zags. This pattern has been around since Neolithic times, but it became much more prominent in Ancient Greece, where it was used as a design feature in the Palace of Knossos on the island of Crete.

The chevron also showed up in medieval times, perhaps most notably as a reward to knights who had captured buildings, with the chevron shape representing the roof of the structure that had been captured.

In the 14th century, the word “chevron” first appeared in the English language. It came from the colloquial Latin word “caprio,” which translates to “rafters,” indicating the pattern’s resemblance to two beams of a roof.

Chevron has continued to be used in practical contexts, such as military classifications, as well as in design contexts, like clothing and interior design. Today, we’re diving into the details of chevron tile, explaining the differences between chevron and herringbone, and sharing ten of our favorite chevron tile options.

What’s the Difference Between Chevron and Herringbone?

Chevron vs. herringbone

Chevron and herringbone are commonly mixed up, but there are a few key differences that make them simple to tell apart.

First, chevron consists of mirrored parallelograms, while herringbone uses staggered rectangles to form its broken zig-zag pattern.

While the look of chevron can be described as an inverted V-shape, herringbone resembles a braid or the bones of a herring fish.

With chevron flooring, you can see clear, straight lines running the length of the floor. Herringbone doesn’t create the same effect due to its offset rectangles.

Why Choose Chevron Tile?

There are several benefits to enjoy when you select chevron tile for a home renovation project.

  • Creates a sense of dynamic movement within the space
  • Makes small spaces seem longer and walls appear taller
  • Evokes elegant Parisian homes, adding a sense of sophistication
  • Has a less “busy” appearance than herringbone because of its symmetry
  • Highlights the features of the room with the arrows formed by the chevron pattern
  • Has a modern, geometric appearance with a simple yet distinctive flair
  • Compatible with a variety of budgets, depending on the material chosen
  • Comes in mosaic form, so it’s as easy to install as regular square tiles
  • Available in a wide variety of colors and materials
  • Pairs well with various grout colors for different finished looks

Where to Use Chevron Tile

Chevron shower tile

Chevron tile can be an excellent choice for flooring in a kitchen, bathroom, or bedroom. It also makes an eye-catching backsplash, fireplace surround, or bar surround. If you love the look and want to emphasize it in your design, consider using chevron tile on one or multiple walls. It also looks great as a shower tile, as you can see in the photo above.
